The Japanese Takashi Amano inspired many aquarium owners to keep the 1 to 5 cm tall cosmopolitan liverwort, Riccia fluitans, submerged. It can be kept on the ground by tying it to a stone with a piece of fishing line, but new shoots always grow towards the surface, so it may need to be pruned with scissors. Riccia fluitans thrives best with added CO2 and, under good growing conditions, small oxygen bubbles form at the tips of the leaves. As a traditional floating plant, it provides good protection for young fish.
