Staurogyne repens Care Guide
Common Name
Staurogyne Repens
Difficulty Level
Easy to Moderate
Family
Acanthaceae
General Description
Staurogyne repens is a popular aquatic plant native to South America, particularly valued for its compact growth and bright green leaves. It spreads horizontally through creeping stems, making it an excellent choice for creating a dense foreground carpet. With adequate lighting and nutrients, it develops a bushy, low-growing appearance that adds a natural look and texture to planted aquariums. It is relatively hardy and well suited to a variety of aquascaping styles.
Care Requirements
1. Tank Size
A minimum aquarium size of 5 gallons (19 L) is recommended. It can thrive in smaller aquariums and works especially well in nano aquascapes.
2. Lighting Requirements
Moderate to High. Moderate to high lighting encourages compact growth and helps the plant spread horizontally. Under lower lighting, it may grow taller and become less dense.
3. CO₂ Requirements
Recommended but not required. CO₂ injection promotes faster growth, denser foliage, and a more compact carpet. The plant can grow without added CO₂, although growth may be slower.
4. Water Parameters
-
Temperature: 20–28°C (68–82°F)
-
pH: 5.5–7.5
-
Water hardness: Soft to moderately hard
5. Substrate
A nutrient-rich substrate is beneficial for healthy root development and spreading. Staurogyne repens can also grow in inert substrates when sufficient nutrients are available through the water column. A fine-grained substrate can help its roots establish securely.
6. Fertilization
Regular fertilization with a complete liquid fertilizer is recommended. Ensure a consistent supply of essential macronutrients and micronutrients to support healthy leaves and compact growth. Root tabs can also be beneficial in nutrient-poor substrates.
7. Maintenance
Trim the plant regularly to maintain a dense, compact appearance. Remove damaged or yellowing leaves and prune taller stems as needed. Replanting healthy cuttings can help fill bare areas and encourage a fuller carpet.
8. Propagation
Propagation is easy through stem cuttings. Cut healthy stems just below a node and replant them in the substrate. The cuttings will develop roots and continue growing, while the remaining stems may produce new side shoots.
9. Placement in Tank
Best suited for the foreground, where it can form a lush, low-growing carpet. It can also be used in the midground around rocks and driftwood, particularly when allowed to grow into small, bushy clusters.
Summary
Staurogyne repens is a versatile, compact aquarium plant suitable for beginners and experienced aquascapers. Moderate to high lighting, regular fertilization, and supplemental CO₂ can encourage dense growth and horizontal spreading. With occasional trimming, it creates a lush green carpet that adds a natural, textured appearance to planted aquariums.
