Microsorum pteropus (Java Fern) Care Guide

Common Name: Java Fern
Difficulty Level: Easy
Family: Polypodiaceae

General Description:

Microsorum pteropus, commonly known as Java Fern, is one of the most popular and hardy aquarium plants. Native to Southeast Asia, it naturally grows attached to rocks and driftwood in streams and rivers. Its long, textured green leaves provide beautiful structure in aquascapes, and its resilience makes it an excellent plant for beginners as well as experienced aquarists.

Care Requirements:

1. Tank Size:

Minimum Tank Size: 5 gallons (19 liters)

2. Lighting Requirements:

Lighting: Low to Moderate

Java Fern thrives in low to moderate lighting. Very strong lighting is not necessary and may encourage algae growth on its slow-growing leaves.

3. CO₂ Requirements:

CO₂: Not required (Optional)

CO₂ supplementation can improve growth slightly but is not necessary for healthy development.

4. Water Parameters:

Temperature: 20–28°C (68–82°F)
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

5. Substrate:

Substrate Type: Not required

Java Fern should be attached to rocks or driftwood. The rhizome must remain above the substrate to prevent rot.

6. Fertilization:

Nutrients: Low

It benefits from occasional liquid fertilization but is generally not demanding.

7. Maintenance:

Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate

Very easy to maintain. Removing older leaves helps encourage new growth and keeps the plant looking healthy.

8. Propagation:

Propagation Method: Rhizome division / plantlets

New plants can form directly on older leaves or by dividing the rhizome into sections.

9. Placement in Tank:

Placement: Midground to Background

Its tall, flowing leaves make it ideal for adding natural texture and depth to aquascapes.

Summary:

Java Fern is a classic aquarium plant known for its durability, adaptability, and elegant appearance. With minimal care requirements and the ability to grow without CO₂ or strong lighting, it remains one of the best plants for both beginner and advanced planted aquariums.
