Endler Guppy (Poecilia wingei) Care Guide with Aquarium Size Requirement:
1. Species Overview:
- The Endler Guppy, scientifically known as Poecilia wingei, is a vibrant, small freshwater fish native to Venezuela. Known for their colorful patterns, these fish are hardy and easy to care for, making them ideal for beginners. They are closely related to the common guppy but have distinct markings.
2. Aquarium Size:
- A minimum of 5 gallons is recommended for a small group of Endler Guppies. Because they are active swimmers, a larger tank is preferable, especially if you plan to breed or keep multiple males and females.
3. Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C)
- pH: 6.5 to 8.0
- Water Hardness: 10 to 30 dGH
- Endler Guppies are adaptable to a wide range of water conditions but prefer clean, well-filtered water.
4. Aquarium Setup:
- Endler Guppies do well in planted tanks with plenty of hiding spaces. Plants like Java moss or Anubias provide shelter and encourage natural behaviors. Floating plants can help reduce lighting intensity, which they appreciate.
- They are surface and mid-level swimmers, so ensure there is enough open swimming space.
- A gentle water flow is preferred, as they are not strong swimmers.
5. Diet:
- Endler Guppies are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. High-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and mosquito larvae are ideal.
- Feed them small portions 2-3 times a day, ensuring they can consume the food in 2-3 minutes.
6. Tank Mates:
- Peaceful fish such as small tetras, rasboras, and other livebearers make great tank mates for Endler Guppies.
- Avoid larger or aggressive species that might bully or eat them.
- They can also be housed with shrimp or small snails without issues.
7. Fish Size:
- Endler Guppies reach about 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 4 cm) in length, with males generally being smaller and more colorful than females.
8. Breeding:
- Endler Guppies breed easily in captivity. Females can give birth to live fry every 23-30 days. To prevent adults from eating the fry, provide plenty of plants or a breeding box.
- They can quickly overpopulate a tank, so keep this in mind if you're not interested in breeding.
9. Disease Prevention:
- Regular water changes and proper filtration are essential to keep your Endler Guppies healthy.
- Quarantine new fish before introducing them to the main tank, and watch for signs of illness such as clamped fins, discoloration, or lack of activity.
With these care guidelines, Endler Guppies will thrive and bring colorful activity to your aquarium.
