Hygrophila difformis Care Guide
Common Name
Water Wisteria
Difficulty Level
Easy
Family
Acanthaceae
General Description
Hygrophila difformis, commonly known as Water Wisteria, is a fast-growing aquatic plant native to the Indian subcontinent. It features bright green, deeply lobed leaves that provide a delicate, fern-like appearance. Its leaf shape can vary depending on whether the plant is grown submerged or emerged. Water Wisteria is excellent for absorbing excess nutrients, helping compete with algae, and providing shelter for small fish and shrimp.
Care Requirements
1. Tank Size
A minimum aquarium size of 10 gallons (38 L) is recommended. Due to its rapid growth and spreading habit, larger aquariums provide more room for the plant to develop.
2. Lighting Requirements
Low to High. Water Wisteria adapts well to a wide range of lighting conditions. Moderate to high lighting encourages faster growth and fuller foliage, while lower lighting may result in slower growth and less compact stems.
3. CO₂ Requirements
Not required. CO₂ injection can promote faster growth and healthier, denser foliage but is not necessary for successful cultivation.
4. Water Parameters
-
Temperature: 20–28°C (68–82°F)
-
pH: 6.0–7.5
-
Water hardness: Soft to moderately hard
5. Substrate
A nutrient-rich substrate is beneficial but not essential. Water Wisteria can grow in a variety of aquarium substrates, provided it receives sufficient nutrients from the water column. Plant stems securely in the substrate to encourage root development.
6. Fertilization
Moderate fertilization is recommended. A complete liquid fertilizer can support healthy growth, particularly in aquariums with limited nutrients. Because Water Wisteria grows quickly, it can consume significant amounts of nutrients from the water.
7. Maintenance
Regular trimming is necessary to control its rapid growth and prevent it from shading nearby plants. Remove damaged leaves and thin out dense growth as needed. Healthy cuttings can be used to propagate new plants.
8. Propagation
Propagation is easy. Cut healthy stems just below a node and replant the cuttings in the substrate. New roots will develop from the nodes, allowing the cuttings to establish quickly.
9. Placement in Tank
Best suited for the midground or background because of its fast growth and potential height. It can also be used as a floating plant, where its roots provide additional cover for small fish and shrimp.
Summary
Hygrophila difformis is an easy, fast-growing aquarium plant ideal for beginners. Its attractive, fern-like foliage adds texture to planted aquariums, while its rapid growth helps absorb excess nutrients. It does not require CO₂ injection and thrives under a wide range of lighting conditions. Regular trimming will help maintain its shape and prevent it from overtaking other plants.
