Anubias Barteri Dark Angel Maintenance Guide and Description

Description:
Anubias Barteri Dark Angel is a stunning variation of the Anubias Barteri species, known for its striking dark green to nearly black foliage. The leaves are broad, glossy, and leathery, making them stand out in any aquarium. This slow-growing, hardy plant is native to West Africa and is known for its robustness and adaptability to a variety of aquatic environments. Its dark coloring adds depth and contrast, making it a favorite for aquascapers looking to create a dramatic, lush, and tropical feel in their aquariums.

Maintenance Guide:

  1. Placement:

    • Best placed in the midground or background of aquariums, where the plant’s dramatic dark foliage can be highlighted.
    • Ideal for attaching to rocks, driftwood, or aquarium decorations using aquarium-safe glue or fishing line.
  2. Lighting:

    • Prefers low to moderate lighting.
    • Bright lighting may lead to algae growth on the leaves, which can obscure the plant's dark color and glossy finish.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F).
    • pH: 6.0–7.5.
    • Water hardness: Soft to moderately hard (3–10 dGH).
  4. Substrate and Nutrients:

    • Tolerates a variety of substrates, including nutrient-poor gravel and more nutrient-rich options.
    • While it doesn’t require high nutrients, supplementing with a balanced liquid fertilizer will support growth and maintain leaf health.
  5. CO2 Requirements:

    • Does not require CO2 injection, making it suitable for low-tech tanks.
  6. Growth and Trimming:

    • Slow-growing and easy to manage.
    • Prune dead or damaged leaves to encourage new growth and maintain a clean appearance.
  7. Propagation:

    • Propagates via rhizome division.
    • Cut the rhizome into sections, ensuring each piece has at least one leaf and root system to form a new plant.
  8. Tank Conditions:

    • Performs well in both low-tech and high-tech aquariums, as long as the water conditions are stable.
    • Best in clean, well-maintained water with consistent parameters.
  9. Algae Control:

    • Prone to algae buildup, especially in high-light environments.
    • Regular water changes and a balance of light will help control algae growth and maintain the plant's appearance.
  10. General Tips:

    • Avoid burying the rhizome in the substrate to prevent rotting.
    • Ideal for aquariums with peaceful tank mates and for creating an aquascape with dramatic dark foliage.
