Discus Care Guide with Aquarium Size Requirement:

1. Species Overview:

  • Discus (Symphysodon spp.) are freshwater fish native to South America, known for their stunning colors and distinctive disc-shaped bodies. They are highly valued by hobbyists for their beauty and social behavior.

2. Aquarium Size:

  • Discus are social fish and require ample swimming space. A medium to large-sized aquarium is recommended for Discus, with a minimum of 50 gallons for a small group.
  • For a larger group or more elaborate setup, a tank of 75 gallons or more is preferable.

3. Water Parameters:

  • Maintain the water temperature between 82°F and 88°F (28°C to 31°C), which is crucial for the health and well-being of Discus.
  • Keep the pH slightly acidic to neutral, ideally between 6.0 and 7.0.
  • Water hardness should be low to moderate, with a range of 1 to 10 dH.

4. Aquarium Setup:

  • Create a spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming room and hiding spots for Discus. Use sturdy plants like Vallisneria and Echinodorus to mimic their natural habitat.
  • Ensure the aquarium is well-filtered to maintain excellent water quality. Discus are sensitive to pollutants and deteriorating water conditions.

5. Diet:

  • Discus are opportunistic predators and will accept a variety of foods, including pellets, flakes, frozen, and live foods.
  • Offer them a balanced diet consisting of high-quality pellets, bloodworms, shrimp, and small crustaceans to ensure optimal health and growth.

6. Tankmates:

  • Discus are peaceful but territorial fish. They can be kept with other peaceful species that prefer similar water parameters.
  • Avoid keeping them with aggressive or highly active species that may stress them out.

7. Fish Size:

  • Adult Discus can reach a size ranging from 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 centimeters) in diameter, depending on the strain and maintenance conditions.

8. Disease Prevention:

  • Ensure regular water changes and adequate filtration to prevent diseases and health issues.
  • Monitor closely for signs of stress or illness, such as loss of appetite, changes in color, or abnormal behavior, and take prompt action when needed.

By following these care guidelines, you can create an optimal environment for Discus and keep them healthy and happy in your aquarium.
